You may not find a more historic farm in the Sandhills of Nebraska or anywhere in the entire state. You may also not see a farm like this hit the market again any time soon. The Metzger Ranch (sometimes referred to as the Abbott Ranch) is a 55,000-acre cattle ranch that has been around since the 1800s. The owners are selling but not all family members want to sell, according to the Nebraska Examiner.
The asking price may not be in most buyers’ bank account: $50 million. But, again, this is a unique property. The Abbott family bought the ranch from the Metzgers more than 50 years ago.
It is not only located in the heart of the country’s top cow county. But it is also loaded with dozens of solar wells, windmills, and artesian flowing wells. It has an airplane hangar, too, and five houses.
The 2,500 cattle have plenty of company from other creatures. The ranch has bass, trout, and walleye for those visitors interested in fishing. It also has trophy mules, antelopes, and white-tail deer that call the ranch home.
Hall and Hall, the firm handling the sale, describes the ranch like this:
“The Metzger Ranch has been home to only two owners since the land was first settled. It is one of the earliest ranches of the Sandhills. The ranch provides a well-balanced combination of native rolling hills, sub-irrigated meadows, excellent winter protection, and miles of live water. Rarely do ranches of such large acreage and quality come to market. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for anyone who dreams of a future in land ownership and cattle production.”
The siblings in the Abbott family are not in agreement that it is time to sell, regardless of whether the sale price could set a state record.
